Most of us have never heard of a mobile phone that is impervious to dust and waterproof to a depth of one meter. I know I don’t ever plan on being trapped in a sand storm or trekking through bogs and thinking, “Oh no! I forgot to cancel dinner plans. I’ll just ring my friend up with my practically indestructible phone.” That will never happen in my life. But I am not naïve enough to think that there is not a market out there for the Land Rover mobile phone, the world’s first IP-67 rated GSM mobile phone.
Sonim Technologies has already had a reputation for years of producing nearly indestructible mobile phones, but now they have stepped up their game with a partnership with Land Rover. The Land Rover S1 is really the world’s very first IP-67 rated GSM mobile. That is a standard that means it has been tested and proven as totally resistant to dust, is waterproof to a depth of one meter, can withstand dirt, shocks, drops and up to 400kgs of pressure. This is truly a phenomenon among the dainty and delicate mobile phones of today.
There are many other endurance features the Land Rover S1 tested above range in. In tests, the buttons have been pressed more than 500,000 times, the battery offers up to 1500 hours of standby time and 18 hours of talk time. (And I thought my 5 hours of talk time on my mobile was brilliant!) The Land Rover S1 device will withstand drops of up to two meters onto hard surfaces, and more than 2,000 vibrations in the 500Hz range. It can also operate in temperatures ranging from -4?F (-20?C) to 131?F (55?C). I wonder: where can you actually subject this mobile to these extreme conditions and still get cellular reception?
There is a need for the Land Rover S1 in today’s market. Many individuals with an adventurous outdoor spirit will find this mobile perfectly suited to their needs. There are also loads of features on the Land Rover S1 for those of us who prefer to remain in civilization. The S1 boasts a 2 megapixel waterproof camera, built-in GPS receiver, torch light, FM radio, 2GB memory slot, WAP browser and Bluetooth capabilities. There is even a three-year unconditional guarantee, just in case you test it to its limits and it happens to fail. Be prepared to pay for rugged features. The Land Rover brand name adds distinction, but it also adds to the price. At the moment, the Land Rover S1 is only available in the United Kingdom for GBP299.00 (USD$490).
Even though the handset can be found at online mobile phone retailers, mostly all based in the UK, there has not been any information released as to whether or not the Land Rover S1 can be unlocked on US carriers. When and if that happens, I’m sure there will be a need for the rugged high quality mobile phone designed for those of us who like to work and play in the great outdoors.
